Tarot Meditation: The Four of Pentacles

Greetings, dear shining stars,

Today I meditate on the Four of Pentacles...

Four of Pentacles
Rider-Waite Deck

In Tarot, the suit of Pentacles brings to mind physicality, possessions and the material. Pentacles are of the Earth element. They are receptive, yin, passive, fertile and grounded. In this suit we find rich symbolism of strength, stability and foundation.

In the Four of Pentacles, we find a lesson in extremes.

Bring your attention to the placement of the four Pentacles in the card and their relationship to his body.

Notice how his feet press firmly into the two Pentacles beneath him; how his hands grasp the pentacle that he hunches over, protecting his heart; how the fourth Pentacle rests above his head.

The Pentacles are placed in major energy centers of the auric field: At the soles of his feet which represent our ability to ground; At the palms of the hands which represent our ability to direct energy; At the heart which represents our receptivity; and at the seventh chakra at the crown of the head which represents openness to Spirit, the universe, cosmic connectivity.

Having a strong foundation, a balanced first chakra, is, well... foundational! It is the beginning of our rainbow journey! Having our feet connected to the Earth, to feel the soil that supports us in a physical and metaphorical sense is necessary for any pursuit. A seed must take root before it can sprout. Yet excess is often destructive. Allowing these energies to dominate our entire being can be incredibly limiting. Uncontrolled, heavy Earth energies weigh us down, diminishing our ability to spread our wings and lift into the ethereal, to take chances and ultimately grow!

The Four of Pentacles offers us this lesson.

The figure depicted appears root bound, trapped by an excess of Earth energy. The support offered by the Pentacles have transformed into chains that imprison. Rather than being open to opportunities before him, to manifestation, to development and discovery, he is hidden behind the roots that bind him, he grasps onto his physicality, the material comforts offered by the Pentacles. It feels safe.

Let us be reminded of the playful balance,
Between taking root and letting grow.

Let us not forget the value of roots,
Of connection to the physical realm,
Of the Earth that gives life.

It is from this place that we spring forward,
From which we can grow and continue to develop,
As children of the Light!

Blessings to all beings,
Maa
